Hudson Valley Traffic Enforcement Hot Spots

Police enforcement of traffic laws is fairly intense throughout the Hudson Valley.  But, there are a number of locations where  enforcement takes place at a very high intensity.  Here are some of the most common roads and locations where enforcement can be expected:

Palisades Parkway

Stationary radar and patrol enforcement occurs regularly from the NY/NJ border to the Bear Mountain Bridge.  However, on the most northern section of the parkway enforcement is done by both the NYS Police and the NYS Park Police.  As a result, many traffic tickets are written from the intersection with Route 6 to the Bear Mountain Circle.

NYS Thruway (I-87)

Speed enforcement on the Thruway in the Hudson Valley is done exclusively by the NYS Police and there are two dedicated NYS Police barracks whose only responsibility is the Thruway.  Speed enforcement is done using radar, laser and patrol.  Large numbers of tickets are written in the Town of Woodbury, Town of Cornwall, Town of Newburgh and the Town of Esopus.

Route 17

Traffic enforcement in the areas south of the Woodbury exit (Exit 16) is done largely by local police agencies.  The Town of Tuxedo issues a large number of tickets where Rt. 17 passes through the main business district of the town.  This is an area where the speed limit (southbound) changes from 55 mph to 35 mph very abruptly as vehicles round a curve.

From Woodbury west through both Orange and Sullivan counties traffic enforcement is largely done by the NYS Police.  The intensity of enforcement is very high (both directions) in the towns of Monroe, Chester, Goshen, Wallkill, Mamakating and Liberty.  NYS police use radar, laser and patrol to enforce speed limits.  Of special note is that in the towns of Wallkill and Mamakating "high speed" violators (over 90 mph) are subject to a JAIL SENTENCE if convicted.  Whether jail is a possibility depends upon the judge handling the case in the local town courts and can vary from a single weekend in the county jail, to a max of 15 days.

I-84

Enforcement on I-84 from the Connecticut border to the Pennsylvania border is almost exclusively handled by the NYS Police.  Radar, laser and patrol are used.  High intensity enforcement takes place in the Brewster, East Fishkill, Newburgh, Wallkill and Greenville towns.

Taconic Parkway

Speed and traffic enforcement is fairly intense the whole length of the Taconic Parkway.  It is especially common in the Towns of Brewster, LaGrangeville, Stanford, Milan and Claverack.  Radar, laser and patrol are all commonly used.  Laser is particularly common in the Stanford/Milan area.  State troopers will frequently pick locations that make detection of a radar or laser unit unlikely until speeds have already been recorded.
